2023 I Photographic Project
Over 10.000 years ago, Lithuania’s landscape was characterized by forests that covered almost 50% of the land, providing shelter for humans and animals. Afterwards, the development of the economy associated with intensive agriculture linked to the effect ofclimate change and insect plagues (e.g. bark beetle) contributed to the degradation of forest ecosystems and their biodiversity. Nowadays, Panevėžys county represents one of the areas with the lowest forest cover (approximately 31%) in Lithuania caused by the continuous exploitation for wood supply to the local industry. Claiming the original identity of the territory, forest rangers have worked hard in recent years to recover the welfare of the forest and its resources. This project documents the reality of deforestation in Panevėžys region and the daily activity of those who continue to care for their natural heritage.
