What can you create with Stop Motion Animation?

Stop motion animation is a fascinating and creative way to bring inanimate objects to life. It involves capturing a series of frames with slight variations and then playing them in sequence to create the illusion of movement.

Any kind of object can be animated, but puppets with movable joints (puppet animation) or plasticine figures (clay animation or claymation) are most commonly used. Stop motion of flat materials such as paper, fabrics or photographs is usually called cutout animation.

Teaching teenagers this art form can be an exciting and enriching experience, allowing them to explore their imagination, develop patience, and enhance their storytelling abilities.

As part of Artihost Art & Culture Residency project Alena from Belarus was staying for 3 months in Panevėžys, Lithuania to develop a project based on a stop motion / cutout animation technique.

During the first workshops, she and the youngsters stared off with talking about different techniques in animation, sharing experience and knowledge in the field of animation. They brainstormed the idea of common work, talked about the favorite places in the city and and attempted to create first animation puppets.

A stop motion video ”What Panevėžys is dreaming about?”/ Apie ką svajoja Panevėžys?” was developed. The time to present the outcomes arrived.

Alena says “The little things that make up the bigger picture. The day of my stop motion video presentation to the public did not end without the small things. The preparation started early. I with other workers were putting all the furniture, snacks for the guests, art supplies, technical equipment together. I finally could put a side the paper puppets and little peaces and put them together to make collages as a thank you gift to the places that let me into their spaces like home. I was in a rush to make it on time, so many peaces that needed my attention. I was really excited when the people started coming in. The presentation started from me sharing the process and the knowledge about animation, then I dove into the experience that I had in my workshops with teenagers trough my time spent together in Artihost residency. I was pleasantly surprised when participants shared their little joys and expressed their interests that they had during my animation workshop. Little stories that were coming out of them made it all worth it. One girl shared about her surprise about how many parts and shots it takes to make the last video, another participant talked that she enjoyed being voice actor and that she could take long takes without loosing her voice and other person expressed how her dream to become illustrator grew even stronger after the workshops. It was a joy to my ears hearing all of this good response. The moment came and we all had the pleasure to see fruits of our labour. Even though the stop motion video was only 6 minutes the public received it with applause. But that wasn’t the end of all the additional little joys. Afterwards we all enjoyed some tea and snacks and in the meantime I prepared for additional workshop”

The Full Circle moment

The day of the exhibition was met with the first snow of this season. I saw 3 seasons in 3 months. When I arrived in the September it was still sunny and green and +26C like in the middle of the summer. In October the true autumn bursted in with its colourful leaves. And in November on the day of my exhibition opening the winter said “Hi!”. It was full circle moment for me.

The time I spent in the woods with the foresters and the time I spend in Panevėžys medelynas-daigynas gave me the insides and experience of how life cycles happen in the forest. From the little seeds that dive and swim in the nutrient rich brews to become stronger and more fertile to the giant trees that fall down.

I captured it all in my photos : the bark beetles, the seedlings, the wood logs, the people that work there, the animals that live there and so much more.

Even though there is a root problem in the woods that’s destroying the trees, I also saw the beauty of resilience in this process. Forest rangers and nature coming together to help each other, working non stop to tackle pest infections and regrow the green plots of lands that I fell deeply in love in my stay in Lithuania. All the infected trees that were cut down were processed into usable wood materials. Another cycle in a life of nature.

The more I looked around the more of those symbiotic circles I saw. The same happened to me when it comes to the place I held my exhibition in. ‘Pragiedruliai’ was one of the first places that we visited with Artihost curators and my last stop where I presented my work.

And the people I met trough these months, all of those faces were standing in front of me. They came to witness and see, to see the begging and the end. To see the cycle. Even though the snow outside was making its presence I felt wrapped in warmth like on that first and hot day that I’ve arrived. I was happy with the result. I was happy of this cycle.

Interview with Artihost Art & Culture Residency II photographer Martina Sedda

1. How did you ended up in photography field?

When you are a child and people ask you “what do you want to be when you grow up?” I always answered “photographer”. At that age I didn’t know exactly what it meant, I liked to take pictures with my old Polaroid camera, of the objects we had in the house, to my family and what could surround a 9-year-old girl. I always followed this desire I had inside, growing up I realised what it could really mean to me.

2. What is the most important thing that catches your eye as photographer and what do you want to tell through your photography?

My eyes are attracted to very different things. A detail, a street, a person, a landscape, a situation, an action. Anything that for some reason catches my attention, no limits of what it might be. I want to tell everything I think is interesting, but I don’t always want to tell too much. With just a picture sometimes you don’t need to say anything else, no?

3. Every photographer has their own style of how they edit the photos, their preferred colour palette? What is yours and why?

I prefer to use analog, and decide in advance about color, grain, and film type. Actually having only a few photos, like in a roll of film, you have much more freedom of thought during the shoot. Ponder better how you’re going to use them and what you’re going to do. About the digital I find myself using it for different circumstances but regarding editing I like to keep it clean, without manipulating the photos too much.

4. What did you learned and gained (as in life experience) through years of photography ?

I’ve definitely opened up as a person. Often if you want to photograph something or someone you have to interact with other people or throw yourself into situations that would not be in your comfort zone. So over time I have changed and I am grateful for that. By interacting with people you don’t know you can discover many beautiful things and it opens your mind.

5. Where do you see photography taking, leading you in your future?

I don’t know where it’s going to lead me but I know it’s been a part of me forever. So far it has led me on many very different adventures and I’m sure will continue to do!

6. There are so many camera equipments in this practice, what is your dream equipment you would like to own, or maybe you already do and why?

Everything I would like to own that I don’t have yet is analog, it will be a long search. Finding what you are looking for, in good condition, at a good price. But I have time for it.

7. The same as there are many camera devices, the same there are many photography techniques. Which one you would like to explore more and why?

I would like to experiment more with some polaroid manipulation techniques and with wet collodion. I like manual techniques very much.

8. Popular opinion or rule in photography that you disagree?

The camera is not always important, you can shoot with a toy camera and shoot something interesting. It’s just a tool, it’s to help us, not to limit our mind or our creativity.

9. What was the biggest challenge in your career as a photographer?

There are many photographers and unfortunately we often look at what others are doing. But if that limits us instead of inspiring us, we need to stop doing that. We are all different, surely there will be similar work but two different people will never do the same thing. We should not be afraid of comparison because we are all different.

10. Lessons that helped your photography?

– don’t be afraid to experiment

– do research but follow your instincts – try to get out of your comfort zone

11. Do you have any tips for other people who want to become a photographer?

If someone is just starting out I recommend finding inspiration from the people you are close to, friends or family, and the places you know well that make you feel safe. Start with something you like, try to tell what you want and don’t be afraid to make mistakes, there are no errors. And don’t worry about the equipment, that’s the least of your problems!

I arrived in Lithuania and the first thing I noticed was definitely the forest. This greenness that captures you and takes you through the days. But one day I discovered that this beautiful green is in danger.

What is destroying Lithuanian forests?

Certainly the over-industrialization that there was in the past started the deforestation process that is still ongoing because of climate change. Rising temperatures and prolonged periods of drought have caused vast fires and the proliferation of bark beetles.

It has now become a major cause. It is one of the most dangerous forest pests in Europe.

Despite their tiny size, the tiny beetles are capable of wiping out entire forests.

But how can such a tiny creature bring thousands and thousands of mighty giants to their knees? With the help of their chewing tools, the pests pierce the bark of coniferous plants and lay their eggs there. Almost a death sentence for the tree. If we do not get this problem under control, things will go badly wrong for our forests. A devastating scenario, environmentally but also economically. The only possible pest control, to prevent the spread of the contagion, is to cut down contaminated trees.

In several European states the beetle has led to the destruction of forests, but in Lithuania the national forest rangers have a definite plan of action to prevent this from happening here as well, fighting deforestation and even implementing forests within the state.

The deforestation process goes in parallel with the reforestation process.

They select infested areas and cut down all the trees within them. All the while the production of new conifers to replace those felled, and for new forests, proceeds.

They put several tricks into practice to implement nutrients from future trees before they are planted, to have stronger forests in the future.

The European bison has also been affected by deforestation, and has been classified as a “vulnerable” animal. These animals in Lithuania are indeed at risk. The ecosystem restoration project will be able to allow the bison to live peacefully without being at risk.

The national forest rangers showed me the Nature Reserve dedicated to the European Bison.

A dawn portion of bison remain wild but are still monitored and kept under control by the guards.

So I went with them in search of these creatures. It wasn’t easy to find them I have to admit, some specimens have gps so they could allow for easier geolocation. We set out at 6 a.m. that day to make the check, and we finally spotted them at 10:30 a.m. With the naked eye it is impossible to see them because they are so far away and it was a rainy day. I looked through binoculars, and there they were, all 64 of them lined up in front of us, less than 1km away, but they could see us very well. Their snouts all toward us with uncertain expressions.

So the guards did their monitoring job, making sure with the drone that all the bison were actually okay. We stayed there until all the bisons were gone into the forest.

And that’s how, side by side with the national forest rangers, I was able to see a close up effects of deforestation and reforestation in Lithuania up close.

Context of Artihost art & culture residency programme

The Artihost residency program attempts to create a permanent, continuous and professional art and culture residence in Panevėžys (Lithuania). Continuity is expected through the implementation of a globally unique residency program based on the establishment of the first hostel in Panevėžys, cooperation with local and international partners, innovative non-formal programs.

The project aims to ensure balanced cultural development in the Panevėžys region by promoting the diversity of creative expressions, cooperation and strengthening the local cultural identity.

Overall Focus

The aim of the Artihost art and culture residencies project is to enable a selected artistic duo to create a project or conduct research during a three month stay at the Artihost hostel in Panevėžys (Lithuania).

The second edition of residency program prioritises performing arts and community arts. We are very much looking forward to projects with a focus on audience engagement.

Who Should Attend

Artihost residency program is intended for Lithuanian and international art and culture creators/representatives. We are looking for an artistic duo (one person coming from abroad and one – from Lithuania) that would want to stay in Artihost residence for the period of 12 weeks and create a project, workshop cycle, production or a draft, conduct a research etc. We strive to create a space for your collaboration and creative process and believe that you can enrich Panevėžys with your practice.

Programme

Residents are provided with a comfortable physical infrastructure (opportunity to work and present works in the most famous cultural spaces of Panevėžys and introducing them with local contacts) and a rich package of artistic and cultural self-expression and development, through education and mentoring. We strive to make the residencies convenient and highly valuable for both the residents themselves and the city. Artihost residents are provided with administrative assistance, tools and periodic meetings of curators, mentors and partner representatives. The Artihost team and an international partner (Abroadship.org from the UK) will provide letters of recommendation applying for additional and further funding for their residency project.

Artihost residence is located in Panevėžys Old Town, Savanorių Square, which until 1929. was the poorest quarter of the Jewish slum Slabada. Residence is nearby central Freedom Square, historic Courthouse, Municipality, Bus station. Located on the top floor of a house built in 1937, the Artihost hostel has 3 rooms, common kitchen with dining area and creative-exposition-performance space. Upon request we can arrange a seperate work space 15 minutes walk from hostel.

When to Get There

Actual duration of the residence is 12 weeks during the period of SEPTEMBER – NOVEMBER 2023

The residency program will be composed while taking your personal needs into account and trying to fulfill your particular project to its fullest potential. We will make a residency schedule prior to your arrival.

Practicals

- Prepare for a 3 months stay bringing whatever is needed for a comfortable stay.

- Bring materials needed for your artistic and cultural creation. You will have some materials available here at the residence, so please check in advance the list available.

- Bring Passport or ID card

- Insurance – this is critical! Please bring European Health Card and Insure in other ways because we do not provide and are not liable for any incidents

- Temperature in Panevėžys goes from average +18 degrees in September to +10C in October and to +5C in November. Rainy days on avarage are 9 days per month. Check the weather forecast here.

Vieta

Artihost rezidencija įsikūrusi Panevėžio senamiestyje, Savanorių aikštėje, kuri iki 1929 m. buvo skurdžiausias žydų lūšnyno Slabados kvartalas. Rezidencija yra netoli centrinės Laisvės aikštės, istorinių teismo rūmų, savivaldybės, autobusų stoties. 1937 m. statyto namo viršutiniame aukšte įsikūrusioje menininkų rezidencijoje Artihost yra 4 gyvenamoji-darbo, 1 kūrybinė-ekspozicinė-performansinė erdvė (64 m2) ir 1 virtuvė, iš viso 212 m2. Pagal pageidavimą galime įrengti atskirą darbo erdvę 15 minučių pėsčiomis nuo nakvynės namų.

Faktinė gyvenimo trukmė yra 12 savaičių 2023 m. RUGSĖJO – LAPKRIČIO MĖN.

Rezidencijos programa bus sudaryta atsižvelgiant į jūsų asmeninius poreikius ir stengiantis įgyvendinti jūsų konkretų projektą maksimaliai. Rezidencijos grafiką sudarysime prieš atvykstant.

Paroda: kritinis mąstymas ir žmogaus teisės per karikatūras

Po 4 ilgų ir intensyvių darbo valandų gimė paroda. Darbai vaizduojami žemiau, arba gyvai atvykite į parodos atidarymą Lapkričio 17 dieną 17:30, adresu Savanorių a. 12, ARTIHOST.

Paroda vyks 1 mėnesį nuo Lapkričio 17 iki Gruodžio 16 dienos, apsilankymas galimas tik pirmadieniais ir ketvirtadieniais nuo 17 val iki 18 val. Po to su darbais susipažinti (prisiminti) bus galima tik šioje skaitmeninėje erdvėje.

Kokia tai paroda?

16 Panevėžio jaunuolių (moksleivių ir studentų) susirinko 4 valandų sesijai “Kritinis mąstymas ir Žmogaus teisės per Karikatūras”. Programą vedė Artihost, o į svečius Romantic viešbutyje ir patį renginį organizavo Panevėžio jaunimo organizacijų sąjunga „Apskritasis stalas“ – PAS.

Per keturias valandas nusikėlėme į PRAEITĮ, aptarėme DABARTĮ ir galiausiai nusklendėme į ATEITĮ. Klausimų buvo daug ir įvairių, po kurių galiausiai viskas virto kurybine versme – karikatūros darbais.

Muzikinis perfomansas Konservų fabriko kiemelyje

Artihost rezidencija buvo unikalus ir nepakartojamas gyvenimo įvykis, kuris man suteikė patirties, apdovanojo gilesne empatija, nauju gyvenimo draugu, ir suteikė galimybę pažinti naują miestą.

Rezidencija prasidėjo 2021 gruodžio gale, nuo susipažinimo su erdve, kurioje gyvensiu, susipažinimo su mano bendra-kūrėja ir bendražyge Stefania Pasare ir, žinoma, Panevėžio miestu. Iki tol nebuvau tokį ilgą laiką praleidusi Panevėžyje. Todėl tai buvo naujas nuotykis, nauja kūrybinė ir asmeninė patirtis mano gyvenime.

Su rezidencijos įkūrėju Justinu Brikiu aplankėme Panevėžio apylinkes, miesto įžymias ir svarbias erdves, menininkus, kurie jau kuria ir taip keičia Panevėžį, taip pat jau sukurtas meno instaliacijas. Tai buvo pažintis atvėrusi mums Panevėžio jautriausias puses. Apsilankę pas prodiuserę Vaida Andrijauskaitę ir foto menininką Dan Hourmet, susipažinome su jų planais, idėjomis ir jau įgyvendintomis projektais. Apsilankius parodoje „Dabarties Ekranas“, aš ir mano kolegė rezidentė iš Rumunijos, iš karto pajutome ryšį su šia instaliacija ir supratome, jog Panevėžio identiteto dalis – tai pramoninė miesto istorija. Panevėžio vis dar veikiantys pramoniniai fabrikai, o taip pat jau apleistos buvusių fabrikų erdvės – tai miesto istorija, miesto

Inspiruota mūsų apsilankymo pramoninėse miesto erdvėse, pokalbių su vietiniais Panevėžio gyventojais, nusprendžiau tyrinėti Panevėžio Konservų fabriko erdvę ir susitikti su buvusiais fabriko darbuotojais. Aplankiusi Panevėžio konservų fabriko erdves, vidinį kiemą, supratau jog tai itin svarbi, tiek geografiškai, tiek istoriškai, miesto erdvė, kuri yra pačiame miesto centre, ir yra energetinis ir istorinis miesto centras. Pradėjau vystyti miesto Identiteto temą ir ieškoti ryšių tarp dabartinio Panevėžio ir sovietiniu metu gyvavusio Panevėžio. Atradau, jog daugelis žmonių save tapatino su savo darbu pramoniniuose pastatuose, savo tuometine bendruomene. Šie žmonės buvo jungtis, kuri sugebėjo aprūpinti miestą būtiniausiais ištekliais ir tuo pačiu jautė, koks buvo tuometinis miesto ritmas, miesto identitetas. Tai šiuo metu labai svarbu, įžengus į naujo, nepriklausomos Lietuvos gyvenimo etapą, praėjus trisdešimčiai metų po daugelio Pramonės įmonių uždarymo, atsigręžti ir pasikalbėti su žmonėmis, kurie buvo svarbūs miesto plėtrai, tobulėjimui, gamybai. Kokią svarbią vietą mūsų istorijoje užima šie žmonės, kokie jų prisiminimai, kaip jie mato kaitą? Kaip jie mato senąsias erdves ir jų panaudojimo galimybes? Šis dialogas tarp kartų yra būtinas tiek Panevėžio miesto gyventojams tiek tiems, kurie atvyksta į Panevėžį. Ką mes išmokstame iš praeities ir kokią žinią ji gali mums perduoti? Ką perduoda mums apleisti pastatai, kurie kadaise buvo pritaikyti pramonės gamybai? Kokias paslaptis saugo tokių erdvių sienos?

Viešojoje erdvėje, paskelbus, jog ieškome buvusių konservų fabriko darbuotojų, šią užklausą peržiūrėjo beveik aštuoniasdešimt tūkstančių žmonių. Į užklausą atsiliepė per dvidešimt žmonių. Iš dvidešimties su kuriais susisiekiau, su manimi pasikalbėti išdrįso šeši.

Aš pasikalbėjau su buvusiais darbuotojais, kurių visų amžius siekė apie 70

Respondentas A užėmė aukštas pareigas konservų fabrike nuo 1980-ųjų iki 1990-ųjų metų. Pasakojo apie visoje Lietuvoje buvusį prekių deficitą, apie pasikeitusį Panevėžio miestą, ir apie melancholiją buvusioms prekybos vietoms, kurios virto naujomis. Viena iš nedaugelio parduotuvių, kuri išlaikė savo vietą ir prekių pasiūlą yra Panevėžio centrinė pieno produktų parduotuvė.

Respondentas papasakojo, jog Konservų Fabrikas buvo vienas mažiausių fabrikų sovietų sąjungoje, įsikūręs strategiškai nepalankioje Panavėžio vietoje, pačiame centre. Tačiau pats KF buvo vienintelis visoje tarybinėje Lietuvoje kuris gamina konservuotus žirnelius. Konservų Fabrikas neturėjo savo šiluminių tinklų, todėl juos dalinosi su Kalnapilio fabriku. Taip pat nurodė, jog didžioji dalis produkcijos vyko į Sovietų sąjungos karštuosius centrus – Maskvą ir Sankt-Peterburgą, todėl Lietuvoje esančios prekyvietės gaudavo tik dalį pagamintų žirnelių ir kitų konservuotų daržovių ir vaisių. Fabrikas apie 1970uosius trumpam buvo paskirtas gaminti saldainius „Korovka“ (liet. Karvutė). Respondentas pasidalino ir algomis, kurias uždirbdavo darbuotojai – apie 70 rublių uždirbdavo žemesnes pareigas užimantys darbuotojai pvz. valytojai. O aukštesnėse pareigose dirbantys uždirbdavo apie 110 -150 rublių.

Respondentas B dirbo konservų fabrike trisdešimt metų ir papasakojo apie darbotvarkę, pareigas, ir kasdienybę fabrike. Fabriko darbuotojai dirbo trimis pamainomis, kiekvienas užėmė skirtingą rolę, ir privalėjo rūpintis kiekviena daržove ir vaisiumi, nes jų galiojimo laikas buvo labai ribotas. Patys jautriausi laikui buvo žirneliai.

Respondentas B pasakojo, jog pagrindinė užduotis gavus žirnelius iš vietinių ūkių, buvo išsaugoti jų šviežumą, tikrinti vandenį, kuriame žirneliai laikomi. Technologinės srities profesionalai – laborantai, buvo atsakingi už žirnelių tikrinimą, tačiau turėjo drauge dirbti su gamybos komanda. Žirneliai sandėlyje galėti būti laikomi tik septynias valandas, kad nesugestų. Konservų fabriko darbuotojai itin dažnai bendradarbiavo, turėjo šiltus ir gerus tarpusavio santykius. Net jeigu keli darbuotojai pereidavo į kitą darbovietę, jie palaikydavo ryšį. Taip pat pasakojo, jog Konservų fabrike dirbo daugiau moterų, negu vyrų. Nemažai darbuotojų buvo Kranto g. gyventojai. Respondentas B pasakojo, jog iki 1940-ųjų Konservo Fabriko erdvė buvo spirito darykla, kuri vėliau pervadinta „Skanėstu“, ten buvo gaminami saldainiai. Nuo 1954 metų pradėta gaminti konservus.

Respondentas C papasakojo, jog Konservų fabrikas turėjo jam priklausiusios žemės, kuri anksčiau driekėsi ten, kur yra dabartinė Maximos teritorija. Ten buvo auginami patisonai, agurkai, baklažanai ir braškės. Tai nebuvo didelis ūkis ir produkcija, kurią pagamindavo iš šių vaisių ir daržovių nebuvo labai didelė. Konservų fabrikas dalyvaudavo įvairiose maisto gamybos ir produkcijos parodose Bulgarijoje, Vengrijoje, Ukrainoje ir Lenkijoje. Apie 90% Konservų fabriko produkcijos buvo siunčiama į Rusijos teritoriją. Taip pat, vaisiai ir daržovės buvo perdirbami į uogienes ir marinatus pagal sezonus. Uogienės buvo gaminamos iš bruknių, spanguolių, braškių ir vyšnių uogų. Tik iš prasčiausių uogų buvo gaminamas džemas. Žiemą būdavo itin didelė paklausa marinuotiems agurkams ir pomidorams.

Korespondas D papasakojo apie Pomidorų pastą, kuri buvo atvežama iš dviejų šalių – Vengrijos ir Rusijos. Pomidorų pasta, kuri buvo atvežama iš Vengrijos buvo labai skani ir aukštos kokybės, dėl to iš jos gaudavosi itin geras pomidorų padažas. O pomidorų pasta iš Rusijos, nebuvo tokia skani todėl ir padažas nesigaudavo itin gardus.

Respondentas E pasakojo, jog gyveno Kranto g. ir vaikystę praleido žaisdamas prie konservų fabriko. Pasakojo, jog darbuotojai buvę labai draugiški. Jis dažnai juos matydavęs einant į darbą ir iš darbo. Kartais vaikai bėgdavo prie vieno iš KF langelių, kur darbuotojos vaikams duodavo paragauti šviežiai pagamintų sulčių. Tai buvo pastatas aplink kurį visada būdavo žmonių, tai buvo dažna susitikimų erdvė, labai mėgstama vietinių gyventojų. Čia buvo gera praeiti, vaikai žaibdavo aplink Konservų Fabriko teritoriją. Respondentas E dalinasi, jog dažnai prekybos vietose išvysdavo tik labai mažą dalį Konservų Fabrike pagaminamų produktų.

Repondentas F dirbo pagal specialią sutartį konservų fabrike ir buvo atsakingas už meninę ir estetinę produkcijos pristatymo dalį. Anksčiau buvo naudojami teptukai ir dažai, bet purškiami dažai, kad padaryti plakatus Konservų Fabriko produkcijai. Etiketės buvo daromos spaustuvėje, jau meninkų sumodeliuotais pavyzdžiais. Etiketėse pavadinimai būdavo užrašomi ir lietuvių ir rusų kalbomis. Kartais kontraktiniai darbuotojai gaudavo ir šviažiai pagamintų obuolių sulčių. Būtent mano respondentas gaudavo sulčių parsinešti namo. Respondentas prisimena KF kaip itin triukšimngas, kur dažnai girdėjosi ritmingas konvejerio garsas.

Greetings! We would like to introduce ourselves. We are an artistic duo: a theatre director from Lithuania Agnė Nemanytė and Wood restaurator and gilder from Romania – Stefania Pasăre.

Greetings! We would like to introduce ourselves. We are an artistic duo: a theatre director from Lithuania Agnė Nemanytė and Wood restaurator and guilder from Romania – Stefania Passare. At the end of December, we started our artistic residency at a completely new venue in the city of Panevezys called Artihost. Artihost is a hostel and a residency space run by Justinas Brikys and Ieva Brike. The aim of this venue is to cultivate a cultural field in the town of Panevėžys and support artists in their research and creative processes.

It has already been a month of our residency at Artihost and so far, we have experienced a rollercoaster of events and met a variety of local artists and craftspeople. It has been an adventure that slowly opened to us the heart of the city. To give you an insight into our residency and artists and activists in Panevezys, who inspire us, we are going to share with you a story of our first encounters with Local influential artists.

On a very stormy morning of January 2022, we decided to visit the exhibition “Dabarties ekranas” on the site of the historical TV screen factory. The artists named this exhibition – Dabarties Ekranas, which translates as “A screen of the present”.

There could not be a better moment than this to visit the exhibition: it was the beginning of the year, a cold winter day, everything looked and felt frozen. And here there was laying a real secret covered by the heavy footsteps of time. A living museum of memories. We encountered the eyes of the previous employees of Ekranas factory and the striking glance that holds so much in itself- time, loss, victory, passion and fragility.

“These remind me of large scale frescoes that start talking to you through the most crucial part of the human body – the eyes. People‘s eyes and faces draw attention to the transience and fragility of human life. I feel that it also highlights the intersection between the present and the past, between what is lost and what is gained. We did not rationalise these Frescoes, but tried to catch the feelings that arose. As if the past and the present were having a conversation about history and its role in the city’s identity. And we were merely the witnesses of this creative explosion that was and is inevitable. Tears of pain and joy were the only words that could come out. “ – Agnė Nemanytė

“There are similar factories in similar conditions in my country, Romania. And I have never really paid attention to the abandoned factories in my home country but Dan’s project opened my mental eyes to a new perspective. I learned that after the factory closed, some of the people were never able to get any other job, because they did not know how to do anything else. Wow… the alienation produced by this change, the fragility of not having a routine in your lifestyle, the shattered souls like the glass that you could find all over the garden…” – Stefania Passare

As far as we know, the factory itself used to be an integral part of Panevėžys city, once even being bigger than the city itself in terms of its significance, size and impact. After spending some time in the streets of Panevėžys and meeting local people and communities, we recognise now that Panevežys has uncountable stories to tell and share, that needs to be heard and valued as historical events to paint the image of the city’s identity. Hopefully through our up-coming artistic projects we will be able to touch the stories of this town and let them echo once again.

When The Roots touch the gold – obejct’s stores

Look at them, now exposed like lavender flowers on the window. You can see the color and its smell is immediately associated.

But if I put you to remember from your memories the color of this flower, yeah, you would have one imagine in your mind. But if i put you now, right in this moment to open your eyes and to look on the plains, one close-up to this flower, would it be the same color as the one from your memories?

The same goes to those objects: you look at them and you might know what’s with them. That’s one of the first stories that it might be deciphered: what is already inside of you.

The following story is the one as the owner of the object knows it. Perhaps some of the objects were mass produced and they could be easily replaced anytime in case of malfunction, but what they have unique is their own story (which is making them in fact original objects, not copy of a copy… of a copy), by the time that touched them and let its footprints through subtle material alterations (ex.: the color change of the varnish depending of the amount of sun they were exposed to; the wear of the surface according to how much and in which manner was used the object; the appeared smell created by the aging of the chemical structure of the material etc). All the objects owned by somebody they behave sort like ego extension, so that’s why those are animated by the soul of its own owner.

The last story is the one created by me through this installation; it is about the order the objects are put and how they were connected – explanation in another article.

Maybe there are other echoes of another narrative threads, but this is what I can tell now: the installation says at least 3 different stories.

It was such an experience for me to assume the responsibility of the taken decision, as I have intervened irreversible on those objects (like the time, right?). In the same time I learned how to gild different other materials than wood (plastic, glass, ceramics). More details in this article.

Letting the real starts to shine…

What I heard was that…

“I got It from my mother; mother is the one who raised me up, meaning my grandma`. Please take care of it, it is valuable, it has maybe over 100 years”, but also “Oh, they cut my tree where I had my first kiss! Those modernizations are without sense and aesthetics!”

So what I gilded was…

The lateral decorative elements – because they were looking like two pillars: one of the past (mother) and one of the future (daughter); pillars that allowed to the familiar values to be transmitted from a generation to another. The object being held in the attic, it doesn’t mean that it was forgotten somewhere, but it was kept with a lot of care away from every source that it could damage it. But you, my reader, what are you keeping there hidden (inside of you), so precious, that you don’t want to give it to nobody outside you, but you would trust to give that value only to another piece from the same essence as you?

What I heard was that…

“I always traveled with my own home: friends or cousins – so never alone”

So what I gilded was…

A continuous line – unifying the faces of the tree depicted girls. The line changes its width, the radius of the semicircle that is drawing, the sharpness of the angle on which it bends, alike the happenings had with the people belonging to the same “tribe”

What I heard was…

“I was doing it in Italy too; here I have continued with my hobby and now there are some Germans in our group. Our community grew up.”

So what I gilded was…

The helix – because it is about mobility, continuity, passion, about what keeps you plugged in, or literally what elevates you.

The juice cap (partially) – because I was impressed by the benefits that the recycle is bringing, in this case: the connection with other people and the fun.

“Birds of a feather flock together (whoever resembles himself gathers)” sounded like that saying. So, for al those who want to join the flock, visit:

What I heard was…

“For our family the symbol of the home is the freedom”.

So what I gilded was…

The outline of the bottom and of the top of the flower vase – it is not about a line along you travel, above or below, but about to be yourself among the others (the dot in the middle of the circle), to be able whatever you want, when you want, to exist! remaining in harmony with the other (the bigger circle of the vase – the lip, in framing the smaller circle – on the bottom of the vase)

What I heard was…

”This I purposed myself to bring it in my first own home”

So what I gilded was…

The story is long and full of emotion, as is the crack on the back of the plate that I filled with gold. How can we show that we care about something if we don’t maintain or repair it? And with every scratch or crack that was repaired, it was at the same time an opportunity to better understand where the weak point was, to strengthen it and look back at it with love, but not with contempt. Like when one of our peers got emotionally wounded, we jump in to support, to include, not exclude.

What I heard was…

“My home is my home, so I always return here; I like my country, flat as it is, with its swamps and its nature. I know what to give to you! A heart-shaped leaf from the flower from my home!”

So what I gilded was…

One heart – on a heart shaped leaf.

What I heard was…

“I’m using it daily; I think that it would look super gilded! Uuuh?”

So what I gilded was…

The decorative elements – both with real gold and imitation, because on time the alloy which imitates the gold will oxidate and it will create a contrast with the real one.

What I heard was…

“I cannot live without it. It was veeery expensive, good, and I use it on daily basis. My bangs would be horrible without it.”

So what I gilded was…

The hanger – it is not always about what good tools you have, if you don’t have a good technique (hand). More over, it exist that saying that “human sanctifies the place”. Day by day, the routine that we have (at the workplace, in our hobbies, at home, in relationships, in autodiscipline etc) it is bringing us some kind of outcomes, which mainly they are the result of our repetitive actions more than the exterior force of the “randomness”.

What I heard was…

“Our symbol might be the brushes and the wooden wheels, because we are artists and projectants, symbols that created the Pegas” (link) – citat exact

Paint stains – because the material you work with is precious (for example: opportunity; events that have been arranged in such a way as to benefit you)

Finger marks from how the brush is held – to highlight that what you create with your own hands (ex.: vigilance; the fact that you acted and went to that energy channel whose frequency you were looking for)

The bottom of the brush brushes – to illustrate how the route left by a human after his passage is marked, and finally, the grounding, the materialization of a decided path. (ex.: materialization of the union between the two above plans)

What I heard was…

“Uuups, I forgot to bring you one object…”

So what I gilded was…

What I could. The object was very small. But it was funny! I had one key ring with the bird Tweety, received from my grandfather along the first keys of my home, when I was around 5 years old. How its hands and feet moved by a string (huge technology for that age!), I loved and cared for it even after it broke, even after 23 years. Yep, this Batman has his limbs moving, too. It was an echo of what was already inside me regarding the notion of ”home”. But you reader, what echoes have you heard in yourself reading through these lines?

What I heard was…

“But I don’t know…”

So what I gilded was…

In fact, I’ve passed the twine through the remains of gold sheets previously used for the other items. I came into possession of this object through play, not necessarily a conscious donation for the project. I was with this participant in the park when he found the twine by mistake. It was much longer, but he broke it so I could show me a game that came from the Chinese tradition: you knot the two edges of the twine to get a circle, then put it between the thumb and forefinger of both hands. The game starts from a rectangular figure with this twine. The first player, too, sticks his fingers through the string to get another figure (maybe an X in the middle). The second player comes in, takes the string off the fingers of the first player maintaining its shape from that round, but because it’s his turn he changes the shape of the string as he pleases. And so on.

After our meeting was over and we went each of us on our ways, I realized that I was all in a smile and that I felt like… home! Look what this trickster did! :)) He didn’t tell me what ”home” was, but made me feel in my own ”home” way, even after he left.

INSTALLATION INSIGHT
– my own vission –

I would have liked that before reading those rows, to take a look to the existing photos to make an idea by yourself (the first ideas say about what you have there inside, what is already existing, much more than the intentions of the author), otherwise I am at risk to impose directly my perception of the idea and notion of “home”.

If it would be to retake this project in another place, the installation would present itself under a different face, because people would have sewn the stories of their life differently, or the reasons to stay in one place would be different, or the entrusted items to be given to me would be different, and the connection of all of them in the installation in a defined space would be unique. The beautiful parts are many, mostly it is about the human part that animates everything.

But what did the author mean?
So I begin my explanations:

In a straight horizontal line…
Standing in front of the dome door: in the mirror on the opposite side of the door, you see yourself with the outline of the glass door behind which you are looking, as well as the tree in the middle of the installation. That tree is a reflection of you. What you see in the mirror is also a reflection of yourself, superimposed by this reflection of the tree, echo of self – of self-awareness.

Behind the mirror whick back is hidden by a blue curtain, is a window with a white frame, on the glass of which a swallow is painted over the gold leaf. The Swallow is a symbol of the soul, which is free to travel, and for the connoisseurs, the outline of this frame resembles the Japanese Torii gate, the gate that makes the transition from the profane to the sacred.

All this way, it is an inner dialogue with the purpose of returning to yourself to the depth at which you know yourself, and going through these gates is to remind yourself that first of all YOU are your home. You are at home where you can be yourself.

In a straight vertical line…
Then, on the frame of that white window is put a brush to which the hardened paint is gilded. It is about the matter that has been given to you to work on in this life. The brush being suspended in the air, it shows something that cannot be controled – like the rain that drenches the ground on the land on which agriculture is done.

In the middle, a brush is placed on the dome frame, which has gilded finger marks from how it was held in the hand.

Down, there’s a brush put on its feet that has its hairs gilded. It tells the story of reality, of grounding, of the path created by yourself through your exploration, your passage through life.

As you look from the door frame at the beginning, on the left side of the mirror are some old suitcases, stacked on top of each other vertically. The last (from top to bottom) is maximally open and gilded, the bottom one is partially open, and the first (in contact with the floor) is closed. To the left of them is another suitcase, smaller, red, placed vertically. All this refers to the legacy that you have come up to the present moment, either given by someone from the past or collected by you.

Above them is a clock suspended in the air. Simple to interpret: time.

And even more above, above the clock, there is a photo on which the word ”freedom” is written in gold. This photo is part of a series of other photos with different other values that are part of the notion of *Home*: ”stability”, ”support”, ”belonging”, ”peace”, ”comfort” photos in the same style of the painting that it surrounds.

These are all created moments and memories.

Ah, how fast time flies, life, right? That’s why the plane is there: to show the vector that starts from simplicity (maybe ”play”), and rises to more complex things (like ”career”).

In the tree…
It was a bracelet with wooden balls. Have you seen it? The balls looked like seeds strung on a thread, so that they would all be gathered together… as in a united community! There could have been a bracelet of wooden balls on each branch, like a family tree for each tribe.

Back to the mirror…

On the right side of the mirror is a brush for hair.

Remember the brushes you used to draw your life with? The brush is for how you draw on yourself.

Then followed by a little cord of hair, which again shows the time, but this time the Daily investment on ourselves, or others (do you have memories of braiding pigtails to your sister or cousin? – grooming).

And further to the right is a tiny ceramic pot suspended in the air.

Next to it is another set of ceramics, made of two pieces: a mug and a saucer. Out of the Cup comes a blue string, like a stream of water. The mug is joined to the saucer by this twine. Just like humans: they seem to be made for each other, offering support to each other just like the ying-yang symbol, but there is support for a third entity, unseen in the physical plane. The idea of this ensemble is union through the ultimate goal.

Next to all this is a flower vase holding a leaf with a gilded heart. The vase is surrounded by three glass lighting objects in the same style as the vase. These objects have pieces of gold leaf inside them. The meaning of this group is *familarity*.

The installation could even be a song, not just a story; it depends how you look at it:
For long objects = long sounds
High objects = sharp sounds
Wide objects = Echo
Overlapping objects = overlapping sounds
Space between objects = pause between sounds

That was my vision, created with what objects and people entrusted to give to me. But what would your story be?

PROJECT CONCLUSIONS

Reminder:

The theme of the project was * the home *. One of the plans that was worked out was the investigation through a free interview with questions such as: “What is the house for a traveler?” / “How does a traveler establish his home?” / “What made the traveler stay in one place?”, Etc.

It was a project about community. The chosen target group was composed by those who were originally born in Panevezys, but stayed abroad for a (long) period, and eventually decided to return to live in the original place, as well as those who came from abroad to live in this city.

What did I gain from this project?

T E C H N I Q U E.

~ I learned to gild on more surfaces other than wood (e.g. paper sheets, photos, plastic, ceramics, metal, glass) by the technique with mixtion, and how this technique behaves according to different conditions (e.g.: the type of substrate on which it is applied, the thickness of the applied layer, humidity and air temperature).
~ I tested different materials/work products than we had in college.

F R I E N D S.

~ I found people with whom I resonated (whom I can hardly wait to revisit, and at the same time I wait for them to come to my place!), and in the little time left of this residency, we spent it together.

I N S P I R A T I O N and L E A R N I N G.

~ Listening to people’s stories, I had the opportunity to think better about what I want and what I don’t want in my life.
~ I understood better why people behave in a certain way, I empathized and understood better where certain emotions arise, being able to judge less certain situations.
~ I’ve learned to listen more, to understand how much detail a story has, and how little time we have to understand them all from the first conversation on one topic. Human memory resembles a spiral interspersed by other spirals, more like a single straight line.
~ I found the passion for painting as much as I was tempted to try other people’s hobbies.
~ About taking decisions.
~ About transforming objects and conveying an artistic message.
~ Practiced storytelling.

Huh, how material is gold, so immaterial things I learned : )

Okay, and summary of all the investigation into “Yeah’ what’s that (a) house for a traveler”? The emotional foundation of the house is based on the first house you have, the one you have.

Location: The Dome at Skaistakalnio Parkas

There is a river – The River of Life – whose depth and flow was not always known nor mapped, and whose banks were lined with many trees. If those trees could speak, what would they say? If I could ask them, it would be: “How come you let your roots here? How deep grow your roots? How did they touch gold?” But they were speaking already, with leaves and branches and bark. Each season was a slow breath in their conversation. What they said to us was . . .

“When the roots touch the gold” is a community art project, which addresses travellers, who came from abroad to live in Panevezys, or who were born here, went exploring the world and eventually decided to return back and settle in Panevėžys.

The non-material part of the project consisted of 17 interviews about what made those people stay in the city [ the gold they found ], and how they have created their homes as travellers [ the extension of the roots, the grounding action ].

The installation in Skaistakalnio parkas will be an expression of more than 24 hours of interactions with travellers: moments of inspiration, openess, tears of joy, support, clarifications, nuggets of human leaves, branches, trunk and precious underground roots.

The material part of the project consists of gilding (putting real gold coats on) personal items related to the grounding story, that people trusted to give to the creator of this project, resulting in one visual instalation. There were made some connections between the stories, yet shown what each of them has solely.

This self-exploratory instalation will open on Wednesday, 9th of March, at 6:00pm, and will end on 16th of March at 6:00pm (lasting one full week), in the dome at Skaistakalnio Park.

Yra upė – Gyvybės upė – kurios gylis ir tėkmė ne visada buvo žinomi ir ne visada buvo nustatyti žemėlapyje, o krantai buvo iškloti daugybe medžių. Jei tie medžiai mokėtų kalbėti, ką jie pasakytų? Jei galėčiau jų paklausti, tai būtų: “Kaip čia jūs išleidote savo šaknis? Kaip giliai augate? Kaip šaknys palietė auksą?” Bet jie jau kalbėjo su lapais, šakomis ir žieve. Kiekvienas sezonas buvo lėtas jų pokalbio kvėpavimas. Tai, ką jie mums pasakė, buvo . . .

„Kada šaknys paliečia auksą“ – tai bendruomeninis meno projektas, skirtas suprasti keliautojus, atvykusius iš užsienio gyventi į Panevėžį arba čia gimusius, išvykusius pažinti pasaulį ir galiausiai apsisprendusius sugrįžti ir apsigyventi Panevėžyje.

Nematerialiąją projekto dalį sudarė 17 interviu apie tai, kas paskatino tuos žmones likti mieste [rastas auksas] ir kaip jie susikūrė savo namus kaip keliautojai [šaknų pratęsimas, įžeminimo veiksmas].

Instaliacija Skaistakalnio parke bus daugiau nei 24 valandų trukmės bendravimo su keliautojais išraiška: įkvėpimo akimirkos, atvirumas, džiaugsmo ašaros, palaikymas, nuskaidrėjimai, žmogaus lapų, šakų, kamieno ir brangių požeminių šaknų grynuoliai.

Medžiaginę projekto dalį sudaro su įžeminimo istorija susijusių asmeninių daiktų paauksavimas (uždėjimas tikro aukso paltais), kuriuos žmonės patikėjo padovanoti šio projekto sumanytojai, todėl susidaro viena vizualinė instaliacija. Tarp istorijų buvo tam tikrų sąsajų, tačiau parodyta, ką kiekviena iš jų turi.Ši instaliacija bus atidaryta trečiadienį, kovo 9 d., 18:00 ir baigsis kovo 16 d. 18:00 (trunka vieną savaitę), Skaistakalnio parko kupole.
